Office of University Publications and OSU Press records, 1907-1995.

Records pertain to the Office of University Publications, the OSU Press, and its predecessor. Subgroup 1, series I, Reorganization, 1926-1935, relates to the reorganization of higher education in Oregon. Series II, News Releases and Publications, 1907-1940, includes materials submitted to Oregon newspapers and publications, as well as information about and artwork pertaining to Oregon State College publications. Other series in Subgroup 1 include Series III. Typing Jobs, 1929-1937; Series IV. General Subject File, 1908-1995; Series V. Index of Publications; and Series VI. Correspondence. Subgroup 2 consists of two series. Series I, Birds of Oregon, 1940 includes the edited typescript and illustrations to the monograph. It was number two in the Studies in Zoology Series and published by what later became the OSU Press. Series II contains materials relating to the journal, Improving College and University Teaching, published 1953-1978 and edited by Delmer M. Goode. Included is general correspondence from that entire time period as well as author correspondence, manuscripts, and edition mock-ups from 1975-1978 for both the journal and yearbook.

Edwin Thomas Reed was born in River Falls, Wisconsin on September 15, 1872. He attended the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1895 with a B.S. He then studied composition and literature at Harvard, earning a B.A. Reed spent a number of years at newspaper and teaching jobs in Wisconsin and Minnesota, followed by ten years as the English Department chair at Moorhead (Minnesota) State Teachers College. The Office of Publications began in 1912; Edwin T. Reed was the first college editor and served until 1943. The office has published a variety of items over the years, but its mainstay has always been the university's General Catalog. Gabrielson worked for the U.S. Bureau of Biological Survey from 1915 to 1940, becoming Chief in 1934. In 1940, the Survey became the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Gabrielson served as director until 1946. From 1946 to 1970, he served as President of the Wildlife Management Institute, then as chairman of the Board from 1970 to 1977.
